The Cleveland Browns delivered a surprising win over the favored Carolina Panthers on Sunday, shifting the focus to Deshaun Watson, the team’s quarterback. Watson managed to turn boos from the hometown crowd into cheers, a significant transformation given the audible dislike previously directed at him from fans in the Dawg Pound.
Before the game concluded, the crowd began chanting, “Let’s go Watson,” despite their previous hostility. This change in tone became a focal point, rather than the game’s outcome itself.
“I was hearing the crowd, the yelling, the positivity,” Watson stated. “That’s my main focus. I didn’t hear any of [the boos], but at the same time, I was just trying to give them something to cheer about and we got that W so that’s all that matters.”
The atmosphere in Cleveland was reflective of a significant shift. Earlier, Watson faced boos when sacked by Carolina’s Princely Umanmielen, who managed a seven-yard loss. However, replays revealed a missed facemask call, which may have contributed to the situation.
Watson’s credibility had been under considerable strain given his performance and contract size. The quarterback’s past included an Achilles injury in 2024 and a four-year struggle to meet expectations due to a substantial contract and a suspension in 2022 for alleged misconduct. These factors shaped the fans’ prior reluctance to support him.
The game on Sunday marked Watson’s first regular-season home match since the 2024 injury. His notable performance, including two passing touchdowns and a comeback win, helped alter the perception of many fans previously displeased with him.
Reflecting on the game day, Watson described a sense of anticipation and urgency. “From the moment I woke up, just the anticipation, just the anxiousness, just everything, just to get in front of the fans,” he shared. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges and the necessity of feeding off the crowd’s energy.
