The Democratic Party is experiencing increasing tension as the influence of its socialist wing grows. Prominent figures within the party express frustration over the rising power of this faction.
Representative Pramila Jayapal from Washington has criticized fellow Democrats for their “disrespectful” reception of socialists in the party’s broad membership. In a discussion with CNN, Jayapal highlighted the dismissive attitude some Democrats have toward voters who support socialist candidates.
“I think that there are a lot of very disrespectful comments that are coming from some parts of the Democratic Party… dismissing the voters who elected these individuals,” said Jayapal.
This conversation arises as socialism gains traction, with socialist candidates achieving significant victories in primaries and challenging entrenched Democrats.
Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor endorsing socialist candidates, saw his support lead to victories for Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier. Their success marks a growing acceptance of the leftist movement within Democratic circles.
Jayapal, the chair emerita of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, argues these victories demonstrate a desire for stronger leadership. She emphasizes that citizens are increasingly disillusioned with traditional politics and are seeking new, bold approaches.
“I think people are sick and tired of the old establishment politics that too many Democrats were part of moving forward, and they’re ready for something bolder,” she expressed.
Concerns arise over the disparate treatment of moderates versus progressives within the party. Jayapal questions the narrative that frames moderate wins as defining the party’s future, while progressive victories are seen as detrimental.
“Why is it that every time a moderate wins an election, people are like, ‘That’s the new blueprint for the Democratic Party.’ But if a progressive or a Democratic socialist wins, ‘Oh, the whole party’s falling to hell in a handbasket,’” she commented.
She also criticized Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro for suggesting that some democratic socialists participate in performative politics. Shapiro, a well-known Democrat, was put on the spot for his stance during a campaign event in Philadelphia.
Jayapal argues for an inclusive understanding of what it means to be a “big tent” party, cautioning against undermining the socialist faction as merely creating noise.
“I find it really insulting to say that Democratic socialists are just making noise,” she insisted. “I think you have to ask, ‘Why is it that we’ve lost so many Democratic voters?’ In these races… it’s because they are bringing voters back.”
