Democratic Lawmakers Call for Investigation Into Data Collection by Freedom 250

Democratic legislators are urging a federal inquiry into potential misuse of personal data from attendees of events related to the U.S. 250th anniversary. They worry this information could aid President Donald Trump and his affiliates in the 2026 midterms.

Call for GAO Investigation

Representatives Jared Huffman and Joe Morelle petitioned the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to scrutinize Freedom 250, a Trump-supported group pivotal to current semiquincentennial events. Their request follows an extensive investigation by their committee into Freedom 250’s activities and its coordination with America250, the official entity overseeing these celebrations.

Their September 8th letter to the GAO expresses apprehension about data harvested at these events potentially benefiting Trump. They assert that taxpayer-funded resources might be leveraged to influence upcoming elections.

Data Collection Concerns

According to Huffman and Morelle, Freedom 250 attendees provided personal details, including names and contact information. The investigation indicates registrations might be processed by Campaign Nucleus, linked to former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale. Another Parscale-related company, Dyspatchit, handled communications, while Ace Specialties managed merchandise sales, granting access to additional attendee information.

Further, attendees allegedly agreed to alerts and requests for donations, subsequently receiving fundraising links associated with Trump through WinRed. The lawmakers demand the GAO assess if protections exist against misuse of the collected information for political gain.

They caution against a potentially significant political asset: a taxpayer-funded contact database, detailed with location and behavioral insights, ready for electoral influence.

Freedom 250’s Position

Freedom 250’s privacy policy outlines its data collection practices, including potential sharing with operational partners. They claim not to sell or rent data except as specified, asserting security measures to safeguard information.

The Democrats’ request for GAO investigation lacks direct evidence of data usage in campaigns but seeks clarity on data management and preventive safeguards.

Background on Freedom 250

Launched by Trump in late 2025, Freedom 250 aims to spearhead events for America’s semiquincentennial. Led by former official Keith Krach, it describes itself as non-partisan, aiming to unite Americans over historical commemoration. It stands accused by Democrats of overshadowing America250, the congressionally endorsed organizer.

America250 vs. Freedom 250

America250 is a congressional initiative coordinating the anniversary events through a commission formed in 2016. Freedom 250 emerged separately under Trump’s leadership, spearheading major anniversary activities. While both involve in celebration efforts, their operations and founding principles diverge.

About Brad Parscale

Parscale played key roles in Trump’s campaign, founding Campaign Nucleus, a platform for Republican campaign engagement. The lawmakers’ letter links Freedom 250’s operations to Parscale’s firms, raising data-use questions given government-backed event involvement.

The House Natural Resources Committee’s Role

The House Natural Resources Committee oversees public lands and related areas. Representative Huffman heads the Democratic inquiry into Freedom 250, focusing on its financial and planning influence over the semiquincentennial activities, highlighted in a recent report.

This call for investigation highlights ongoing concerns about data privacy and political leveraging in upcoming elections.
