New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently participated in an unveiling ceremony for a new 9/11 Memorial Wall at One Police Plaza in New York City. His attendance has sparked controversy among critics who have questioned his past comments and affiliations.
Some residents and Republicans have called for Mamdani to skip memorial events commemorating the World Trade Center attacks. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, and heated debates have emerged over Mamdani’s presence. Actor Robert De Niro weighed in, expressing criticism of some of Mamdani’s law enforcement comments while defending his right to attend the memorial.
De Niro argued that Mamdani’s previous rhetoric does not disqualify him from attending 9/11 remembrance events. Despite acknowledging calls to defund the police amid the George Floyd protests, De Niro maintained that Mamdani should be given a chance to participate in the memorial.
“You can’t defund the police. It’s not going to happen,” De Niro stated, acknowledging the controversy. However, he believes Mamdani’s presence could serve as an opportunity for unity.
Critics have pointed to Mamdani’s associations with figures linked to radical Islamic ideologies and his past comments on law enforcement. One instance involved Mamdani giving a ceremonial pen from a 9/11 remembrance event to a former representative of a convicted al Qaeda member. Critics view these associations as problematic, casting doubts on his role in remembrance activities.
An online petition, signed by over 100,000 individuals, urges Mamdani to abstain from attending the memorial. The petition cites Mamdani’s praise for individuals linked to terror activities and his endorsements of candidates with controversial views on 9/11.
Rafael Mangual of the Manhattan Institute highlighted Mamdani’s contentious record, noting his criticism of the NYPD and associations with individuals linked to terrorism. Mangual questioned whether Mamdani is suitable for attending official memorial ceremonies.
Additional critics, including Mary Marslender, a Republican consultant, have emphasized Mamdani’s call to defund the police and his refusal to distance himself from extremist voices. Former RNC national spokesperson Elizabeth Pipko criticized De Niro’s defense of Mamdani, arguing it disregards the values that unite Americans.
Mamdani’s office has not provided comments regarding the controversy. The heated debate continues, reflecting broader tensions surrounding political commentary and 9/11 remembrance events.
