Danny DeVito Reflects on Wild ‘Taxi’ Parties and Career Growth

Following the completion of filming for the show “Taxi,” Danny DeVito and his co-stars reportedly engaged in a different atmosphere off-camera. DeVito shared that cast members, celebrity guests, and friends gathered for extravagant parties that lasted until dawn. These gatherings featured loud music, assorted snacks, and drugs, reflecting the wild spirit of the 1980s.

In a conversation on the “All the Smoke” podcast, DeVito explained, “Those parties were intense. We had crudité and cocaine… the ’80s were a chaotic period.” These events were not limited to the “Taxi” cast; many notable figures joined, including individuals from “Laverne & Shirley,” Robin Williams, John Belushi, and Michael Jackson. DeVito recalled, “Michael Jackson would watch from a booth. Numerous visitors attended, making the parties memorable.”

The celebrations commenced immediately after the nightly filming, with music playing until sunrise. The cast and guests would enjoy themselves until the early morning hours, with the only requirement being to report to work on Monday at noon. DeVito’s portrayal of Louie De Palma, the abrasive dispatcher on “Taxi,” earned him prestigious accolades, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe. The ensemble cast also featured actors like Judd Hirsch, Marilu Henner, Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Conaway, and Andy Kaufman.

Reflecting on his time on “Taxi,” DeVito noted the dedication of the show’s writers: “It was an amazing experience working with committed and creative writers who always delivered.” The success of “Taxi” propelled DeVito to Hollywood prominence, setting the stage for a successful and diverse career.

After “Taxi,” DeVito expanded his repertoire as an actor, director, and producer. His notable roles include performances in “Twins,” “Batman Returns,” and “Matilda.” Since 2006, he has continued to entertain audiences as Frank Reynolds on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” showcasing his adaptability and comedic flair.
