Costco Rations Kirkland Motor Oil Amid Rising Prices

Costco Rations Kirkland Motor Oil Amid Rising Prices

Costco has introduced a purchasing limit on its Kirkland Signature motor oil. Members are now restricted to buying two boxes per week. This decision follows a significant price increase of the oil, originally reported by The Auto Wire.

Price Increase and Product Function

The Kirkland product, a two-bottle case of 5-quart synthetic motor oil, is used in gasoline vehicle oil changes. It’s essential for lubricating and protecting engine parts, reducing wear, managing heat, and improving efficiency. Costco’s website lists this product at $57.99, a jump from prices in the mid-$30s, a range maintained for years according to automotive news.

Limitations and Product Availability

Costco warns that members can only engage in one transaction per membership, with a maximum of two units every seven days. It’s unclear how long these restrictions will last. Other motor oil options at Costco are also limited, such as Mobil 1, priced at $44 per six-quart, capped at five units per member.

Reasons for Capping Purchases

According to The Auto Wire, Costco may be uncertain about future stock availability or anticipates further price hikes that make stock-buying economically impractical. Newsweek has reached out to Costco for comments but is still awaiting a reply.

Impact of Global Events on Motor Oil Prices

The spike in oil and gas prices stems from geopolitical tensions, notably the Iran conflict. Oil companies are shifting focus to more profitable products like petrol and jet fuel, leading to reduced motor oil production. Consequently, this supply shortage impacts prices, affecting consumers at budget retailers like Costco.

Higher standards and rigorous testing add to production costs. This situation unfavorably impacts drivers who prefer doing their own oil changes to save money.

Industry Response

Oil prices surged more than 3% on Monday, following a 9% rise last week, amid Middle East conflicts. Brent crude surpassed $100, reaching over $108 per barrel, reflecting these global disturbances.

Costco’s competitors, such as Walmart, AutoZone, and Amazon, haven’t implemented purchasing limits. Walmart’s synthetic oil sells at $32 per 5-quart jug, or $64 for two. AutoZone and Amazon offer similar prices for Mobil 1 products. Newsweek awaits comments from these companies.

Reasons Behind Costco’s Decision

The competitive pricing of Costco’s Kirkland motor oil, a popular low-cost alternative, could motivate the retailer to limit purchases to prevent stockpiling or resale.
