Mamdani’s claims of war crimes against Netanyahu have been met with strong disapproval from the Prime Minister’s office. This situation is compounded by anti-Israel streamer Hasan Piker delivering a speech at a college Democrats event.
Recently, a past 2023 clip has resurfaced, drawing criticism. Mamdani had described Israel as “an idea” on the podcast “Here & Everywhere: The Solidarity Roundtables.” In this discussion, he criticized politicians’ longstanding support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. He commented on their outdated views regarding a two-state solution and described the impracticality of such a solution due to the geographical challenges faced by Palestinians.
Critics argue that these comments highlight Mamdani’s history of opposing Israel, which may be alienating the Jewish community. In response to Mamdani’s remarks, Netanyahu has labeled the arrest threat as based on a “bogus arrest warrant.” Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim, secured the Democratic Party’s nomination for New York City mayor in June.
“He lives in a bubble where everyone thinks like him,” noted Foundation for the Defense of Democracies research fellow Hussain Abdul-Hussain. “His knowledge is shallow and mainly talking points.”
Criticism continues as Mamdani’s response to anti-Semitic incidents and support for pro-Palestinian causes are scrutinized. Notably, he missed the annual Israel Day Parade, the first mayor to do so since its inception in 1964.
Mamdani disclosed that the New York City Law Department is examining the legal feasibility of arresting Netanyahu. He reiterated his support for the International Criminal Court’s stance, asserting, “I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague.” These comments follow the ICC’s 2024 issuance of arrest warrants against Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
