A Democratic congressman is calling for answers after an incident involving an ICE officer in Austin, Texas. The alleged shooting by an ICE officer took place on Sunday morning during an operation. City leaders in Austin will address this incident, described as an ‘Immigration and Customs Enforcement shooting,’ at a news conference scheduled for 4 p.m. at Austin City Hall. The speakers will include Mayor Kirk Watson, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, and Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is conducting an investigation in the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane. However, they did not provide information on any injuries resulting from the incident. A DPS public information officer confirmed the location of the ICE investigation to FOX 7 Austin. They stated, ‘ICE investigation confirmed in the 7000 block of West Anderson, ICE is handling investigation.’
In a post on X, Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, expressed concern over the alleged shooting by ICE in Austin. He called for a full, independent investigation and urged the immediate release of any body-camera footage. Casar asserted, ‘Over and over, ICE has shot people and then lied about what happened. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability.’
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details concerning the shooting.
This investigation follows a period of increased tension over federal immigration enforcement efforts throughout the United States. Similar incidents have previously sparked clashes and fueled criticisms. For example, in May, protesters clashed with law enforcement outside New Jersey’s Delaney Hall immigration detention center after they were ordered to relocate during a demonstration. In another case, national scrutiny arose in Minnesota following the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, both involving federal officers.
