The Democrats face a challenging scenario as they head into this year’s Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park, grappling with a six-game losing streak. The potential addition of former Texas Rangers and New York Yankees star Mark Teixeira to the Republican roster adds to their concerns. Teixeira, ranked 58th on MLB’s all-time home run list with 409 homers, is anticipated to secure a Congressional seat in November, making him eligible to play for the GOP.
This possibility has led the Democrats to strategize on how to counter Teixeira. Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) mentioned, “We’re just going to walk him every time we have an opportunity.” He even suggested recruiting a major league player for their side.
Mark Teixeira, who last played professionally in 2016, expressed enthusiasm about participating. “I’m excited about knocking off the rust — then beating the Democrats on and off the field,” he stated. His excitement was shared on social media, highlighting his eagerness to join the game.
The Republicans seem well-prepared, with Greg Steube (Fla.-17) ready to pitch. Known for his strong performances, Steube recalls his achievement of a home run out of Nats Park in 2021, a feat not seen in 40 years during the Congressional Baseball Game. “I’ll take the mound for the Republicans in the annual Congressional Baseball Game for charity. Looking forward to taking down the Democrats (again) and supporting a great cause!” he shared.
Adding to the Democrats’ concerns, Rep. Pat Harrigan (R-N.C.), another Republican player, has a history of effortlessly handling the Democrats on the field. A former college baseball player at Georgetown, Harrigan notes the Republicans’ five consecutive wins. “Republicans have won the game five years in a row, and for some reason the Democrats keep showing up,” he commented.
With potential new talent and seasoned players like Steube and Harrigan, the Democrats face the reality of their losing streak extending further. However, the games serve a charitable purpose. In 2025, the event raised $2.75 million for D.C. charities, and this year’s event is expected to surpass that amount.
Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) celebrated the Republicans’ victory over the Democrats with a 16-6 score in the 2023 game, emphasizing their recent dominance.
