Conflicting Reports on Strait of Hormuz’s Status After Iran’s Announcement

Iran’s military has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This decision followed air strikes in Lebanon, which Iran called “America’s blatant breach” of a war-ending Memorandum of Understanding. This information was reported by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Conversely, both Iranian and American officials claimed the crucial shipping lane remains open. A statement from Iran’s military operations command, shared on Tasnim’s Telegram account at approximately 9:10 a.m. ET, declared the strait closed to vessel traffic.

However, Iran’s foreign ministry contradicted this, telling Tasnim that shipping operations were ongoing.

In a live interview with Fox News at 9:30 a.m., U.S. Vice President JD Vance reaffirmed that “the straits really are open.” He emphasized continuous efforts to maintain clear shipping lanes.

Tasnim’s affiliation with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps means its reports might align with military or hardline views rather than representing a cohesive government stance.

These contradictory reports add uncertainty to the situation at the Strait of Hormuz. As one of the world’s key oil chokepoints, the strait is a critical passage for roughly one-fifth of global energy supplies under standard conditions.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
