A coalition of faith and community leaders is urging Governor JB Pritzker to intervene in reopening Weiss Memorial Hospital and West Suburban Medical Center. The ongoing court battle over the hospitals’ futures necessitates immediate action, according to Rev. Robin Hood, a notable pastor and activist in Chicago.
Call for Action
During a news conference, Hood emphasized the importance of addressing this public health crisis. “The state has failed our families and seniors,” he stated. The leaders are requesting a meeting with the governor to discuss strategies for reopening these facilities. Marc Kaplan, associated with Northside Action for Justice, demands a meeting with the relevant administrative bodies within 72 hours.
Governor’s Office Response
A spokesperson from Governor Pritzker’s office refrained from committing to a meeting but noted, “Despite intensive financial and operational support from the State, West Suburban and Weiss Hospitals are private entities whose leadership was unable to maintain operations. No formal requests or plans were presented to the State.”

Court Proceedings
The closure of Weiss in Uptown was prompted by federal cuts to Medicare funding based on operational issues, while West Suburban in Oak Park halted its functions in March due to billing system problems. The ownership dispute between Dr. Manoj Prasad and Reddy Rathnaker Patlola has led to legal proceedings, with Patlola’s firm, Ramco Healthcare Holdings, pursuing receivership over mismanagement allegations.
The court, however, denied this request following an agreed settlement framework between both parties. Yet, recent attempts to finalize this agreement have proved unsuccessful, with Ramco seeking judicial enforcement to uphold the settlement.
Delay in Negotiations
Negotiations have stalled, with Resilience dissatisfied with the previously agreed terms. Ramco filed a motion to enforce the settlement or appoint a receiver, indicating prolonged challenges in reaching a resolution.
Community Frustrations
Community leaders voiced frustrations at the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board’s decision to extend Weiss’ service suspension by six months. Previously, Resilience halted Weiss’ operations as a temporary measure, requiring board authorization for extensions beyond a year.
Rev. Hood criticized the board’s leniency, questioning accountability measures given past management inadequacies. Board Chair Debra Savage abstained from commenting due to ongoing board proceedings.
