Marlon James and Douglas Stuart, both past Booker Prize winners, are once again contenders for this esteemed fiction award. They are joined by an array of narratives featuring Dublin gangs, dystopian sci-fi, and characters born of New England. Elizabeth Strout, a Pulitzer Prize laureate, adds to this intriguing mix of storylines.
The selection process involved a thorough review of 163 novels, culminating in a list of 13 semifinalists unveiled on Tuesday. Mary Beard, head of the judging panel, described the chosen works as literary ‘dynamite.’
Among the semifinalists is James’ novel, “The Disappearers,” which explores the lives of gay men in 1980s Jamaica. Stuart’s “John of John” delves into the unraveling of father-son secrets on a secluded Scottish isle. Strout’s “The Things We Never Say” offers a heartfelt look at life in small-town America.
James secured the Booker Prize in 2015 with “A Brief History of Seven Killings.” Stuart received the accolade in 2020 for “Shuggie Bain.” In 2009, Strout earned the Pulitzer Prize for “Olive Kitteridge.” Her recent work, “Oh William!”, was a finalist in the 2022 Booker Prize.
This year’s longlist presents a blend of both familiar and emerging voices from the literary world. Authors from Britain, Ireland, Jamaica, Mexico, Turkey, and the United States are represented. Three debut authors make this list: Kenan Orhan with “The Renovation,” Rebecca Perry with “May We Feed the King,” and Djamel White with “All Them Dogs.” White is notably the youngest contender at 28.
At 81, M. John Harrison is the oldest author in contention, with his work “The End of Everything” challenging the convention of sci-fi novels on the Booker list. Other notable works include “The Shadow of the Object” by Chloe Aridjis, “Black Bag” by Luke Kennard, “The Vivisectors” by Missouri Williams, “Switzy” by Emma Cline, “Helen of Nowhere” by Makenna Goodman, and “The Palm House” by Gwendoline Riley.
Mary Beard noted that the judging committee, which includes personalities like Jarvis Cocker and novelist Patricia Lockwood, was determined to go beyond the traditional idea of what a Booker winner might be. They prioritized novels that challenged perceptions and expanded boundaries.
The 2023 Booker Prize seeks to spotlight risk-takers in literature who present new ways to view the world. Last year’s prize went to David Szalay for “Flesh.”
The six finalists of the 2023 Booker Prize will be announced on September 22, with the winner revealed on November 9 in London.
