Colts Struggle for Wins Amid Injury Woes

The Indianapolis Colts approach Week 3 still searching for their first victory after losses to the Baltimore Ravens in the season opener and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. The game against the Chiefs was particularly tough, as wide receiver Alec Pierce suffered a left heel injury early in the second quarter, carting him off to the locker room.

This injury is concerning because it’s the same heel Pierce had surgery on during the offseason, causing him to miss most of training camp. Despite this setback, the Colts kept the game close, emphasizing their perseverance. Pierce’s absence is critical, and the team cannot afford to be without him for long. However, they may have to prepare for his extended absence.

On Monday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared that Pierce plans to rehab the injury instead of undergoing surgery, sidelining him for “several weeks” while recovering. If no setbacks occur, he might return midseason. There’s also a possibility of placing him on injured reserve, and surgery isn’t entirely ruled out, depending on his recovery progress.

Alec Pierce recently signed a four-year, $114 million extension, taking over as the Colts’ primary wide receiver after the departure of Michael Pittman Jr. His performance last season, with 47 catches, 1,003 yards, and six touchdowns, showcased his value to the team.

Unfortunately, the injury threatens his ability to build on last season’s success. During his absence, expect more targets for tight end Tyler Warren, receivers Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, and recent acquisition Darius Slayton.
