The start of the college football season becomes apparent with the release of preseason polls. Recently, the USA Today Coaches Poll stirred discussions online about the rankings and the value of these early predictions. While the rankings don’t bother me much, a few teams stand out as potential overperformers this year.
Understanding the Coaches Poll
Though the Coaches Poll is not the same as the College Football Playoff (CFP) Rankings, the top 12 in the preseason give an idea of which teams are likely contenders by December. Here are three teams outside the top 12 poised to make the CFP in 2026.
LSU Tigers (Preseason Rank: 13)

The addition of skilled coordinators, Charlie Weis Jr. and Blake Baker, strengthens their position. The team’s $40 million roster is bolstered by the top-ranked transfer portal class, providing substantial potential.
Kiffin’s understanding of LSU’s high expectations suggests that reaching the playoffs in 2026 is crucial, not just to meet fan hopes but to solidify his role in the team.
SMU Mustangs (Preseason Rank: 20)

SMU’s shocking entrance into the Playoff two seasons ago was a major event. Despite a dip in 2025, they were close to reclaiming their spot, losing narrowly to Baylor and other opponents.
With a solid returning player base, including Jennings, and both coordinators returning, SMU’s path seems favorable. Avoiding tough opponents like Miami and Clemson during the regular season could favor another strong performance, with the ACC Championship in their sights.
Houston Cougars (Preseason Rank: 24)

The team’s well-placed schedule, avoiding powerful opponents early on, allows them to challenge for the Big 12 title effectively. If they overcome Texas Tech, they might establish a strong foothold in the conference race.
