The annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago is spotlighting a shift in global clinical trials. Previously dominated by U.S. and European drug trials, this year’s event highlights China’s rise in biotechnology.
China’s Growing Influence
One of the meeting’s main attractions is a Chinese-only clinical trial presentation. This marks a major milestone and reflects the rapid expansion of China’s biotech sector. In recent years, China’s industry has evolved from a niche market to a major force in inventing and testing new medicines.
“This tells us that the Chinese biotech industry has arrived,” said Dr. Otis Brawley, a professor at Johns Hopkins who has been attending ASCO since 1989.
Concerns Among U.S. Stakeholders
U.S. officials, executives, and doctors express concern over this shift. They worry about losing control over drug innovations and America’s leadership in biotechnology. The growing prominence of China’s biotech industry raises questions about the future of research, patient care, and jobs in America.
