Chiefs Dominate Broncos in Monday Night Opener

The Denver Broncos’ ambitions to control the AFC West took a major hit in the opening Monday Night Football game of the 2026 season. They suffered a heavy 31-10 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

The return of Patrick Mahomes after a nine-month recovery from ACL and LCL tears was a major focus. While Mahomes played well, it was running back Kenneth Walker who stole the show. Fresh from his Super Bowl LX MVP performance, Walker secured 191 total yards (173 rushing, 18 receiving) and scored two touchdowns.

Denver’s opening was shaky, with Chiefs rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepting Bo Nix, setting up Mahomes to score with a 15-yard touchdown run. From that moment onwards, Walker excelled.

In the second half, the Chiefs took a gamble on fourth-and-1 at their own 40-yard line. Walker ran 60 yards for a touchdown, marking a standout moment. Denver’s offense, however, struggled significantly under new offensive coordinator Davis Webb. Apart from an early touchdown pass from Nix to Evan Engram, Denver failed to deliver, resulting in a series of punts.

Denver gained a brief advantage when safety Brandon Jones intercepted Mahomes, setting them up at the Chiefs’ 5-yard line. But penalties and fumbles limited them to a field goal. Later, another Nix fumble led to a Walker touchdown catch from Mahomes, sealing the victory for Kansas City.

Travis Kelce achieved a significant milestone with a 59-yard catch-and-run, surpassing Jason Witten for second place on the all-time receiving yards list for tight ends. Kelce ended with 71 yards, leading Chiefs receivers.

The game highlighted Kansas City’s dominance in the AFC West, with Denver unable to challenge their status.
