Sam Antonacci of the Chicago White Sox illustrated a savvy play in the sixth inning against the Minnesota Twins, turning a deflected grounder into a double. When batting with runners on second and third and only one out, Antonacci faced a drawn-in infield defense from the Twins. He managed to hit the ball up the middle, where Twins second baseman Kody Clemens attempted a dive, causing the ball to deflect off Clemens’ glove and roll into center field. This allowed Antonacci to hustle and reach second base.
“I have a knack for knowing when to take that extra base,” Antonacci said. He acknowledged that this aggressive style sometimes leads to trouble but mostly proves successful.
His effort helped two runs score during the play. Sox manager Will Venable praised Antonacci’s awareness and habits instilled during spring training. Antonacci later scored thanks to Randal Grichuk’s single. Antonacci contributed significantly to the team’s 10-1 victory at Rate Field with three doubles, two RBIs, and two runs.
The Sox’s offense shone with Grichuk and Kyle Teel hitting home runs in the eighth inning. Manager Venable commented on the outstanding offensive performance, especially with Antonacci’s effective hitting and base running.
The Sox remain top of the AL Central with a 75-68 record, leading the Cleveland Guardians by 2 1/2 games. The Guardians won against the Detroit Tigers, while the Twins fell further behind in third place.
Chicago’s bullpen played a crucial role in their triumph, deploying four relievers after starter Bryan Hudson. The pitcher lineup amassed 15 strikeouts against the Twins. Lefty Hagen Smith retired all nine batters he faced and struck out three during his longest career outing of three innings.
“Hagen’s three-inning performance was special,” Venable remarked. “He consistently impresses by getting swings-and-misses.” Smith’s stellar season is evident through his 0.56 ERA across ten appearances.
This bullpen mastery led to decisive run support in the fifth inning. Antonacci doubled, scoring on Munetaka Murakami’s single before contributing to a further lead with his two-run double. Grichuk’s RBI single further extended the advantage.
Antonacci expressed satisfaction at contributing effectively, particularly during the intense month of September. His enthusiasm for aiding the team was echoed throughout the club, as victories become paramount during playoff contention.
Runs continued to flow in the seventh and eighth innings, marked by home runs from Grichuk and Teel. The Sox concluded their season series against the Twins with an 8-5 record.
Teel shared optimism about the team’s future, reflecting on the cohesive potential seen in recent performances.
