Chicago Blackhawks Training Camp Recap

Chicago Blackhawks Gear Up for the 2026-27 Season

The Chicago Blackhawks have wrapped up their training camp for the 2026-27 season. With a shortened preseason, teams have had to quickly refine their lineups and strategies. While established teams like the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights can readily build around stars like Nathan MacKinnon and Jack Eichel, the Blackhawks face uncertainty. There is optimism around their improved roster, especially with additions like Patrick Kane and Bowen Byram. Still, building chemistry is crucial as they prepare to begin their season against the Golden Knights in Las Vegas.

General manager Kyle Davidson noted on the first day of camp that new rules require teams to establish a realistic NHL lineup and create synergy quickly. “We want to hit the ground running on Day 1,” he said, emphasizing the importance of immediate chemistry.

Training Camp Lineup and Adjustments

Coach Jeff Blashill maintained a consistent lineup throughout camp, with Roman Kantserov, Frank Nazar, and Kane forming the top line. Alex Vlasic and Byram stood as the top pair among defensemen. Adjustments will come once captain Connor Bedard returns from injury, expected in November. Blashill remains optimistic, though he acknowledges the team hasn’t played at full strength yet.

Blashill remarked, “I believe in this group, and whether we’re ready to be at full capacity for the opener, we’ve worked tirelessly to be as prepared as possible.”

Key Standouts

Bowen Byram

Bowen Byram made a notable debut with the Blackhawks, showcasing his skills in a preseason game against the Minnesota Wild. Despite their AHL-heavy lineup, Byram’s hat trick was impressive. His partnership with Vlasic looks promising, adding offensive power to the defense.

Byram expressed confidence in his pairing with Vlasic, saying, “I feel like we have natural chemistry. His defensive style complements mine, making play easy.”

Roman Kantserov

As a 22-year-old Russian wing, Roman Kantserov displayed potential as a reliable player alongside Patrick Kane. With seven shots on goal in three preseason games, he scored his first unofficial NHL goal in a win against the St. Louis Blues.

Kantserov commented, “It’s unbelievable scoring here, but now, it’s time for Vegas and the regular season.” His experience in the Kontinental Hockey League aids his transition into the NHL.

Kevin Korchinski

Kevin Korchinski, a 22-year-old defenseman and the seventh pick in the 2022 draft, faces a challenging position. Although signed to a two-year deal, he struggled with playing time during preseason matches.

Blashill noted Korchinski was on the periphery but acknowledged his reliability in camp drills and potential future contributions should he remain with the team.

To preserve Korchinski’s position, the team may keep him as a seventh defenseman. Ian Cole, on a one-year contract, could pave the way for Korchinski’s future impact. As the Hawks prepare for the regular season, developing consistency will be crucial.
