The Chicago Tribune archives reveal a notable event from August 4, 1978, when ChicagoFest began at Navy Pier. Approximately 40,000 people attended the festival’s first day. The main stage featured performances by Muddy Waters, Eddie Money, and other musicians.
The festival offered a range of entertainment including carnival rides, a children’s area, and live radio show broadcasts. The Jimmy Dorsey orchestra with Lee Castle was a highlight, and the event ran at Navy Pier for five years before moving to Soldier Field in 1983.
Bart Conner’s Gymnastics Success in 1984
On the same date in 1984, Bart Conner delivered an impressive performance in the parallel bars, earning his first gold medal. Despite undergoing surgery for a torn bicep in the previous December, Conner excelled. He also helped the U.S. men’s gymnastics team win its first team all-around Olympic gold medal in 80 years.

The Cubs game against the Astros faced interruptions, with the stadium being evacuated during the storm. The game concluded late at night with an Astros victory.
