The Decline of Alcohol in Chinese Social Life
For decades, alcohol has been a central part of both professional and social gatherings in China. However, a new trend is emerging as the younger generation increasingly declines to indulge in excessive drinking or any alcohol consumption at all.
Reasons Behind the Change
Many young people in China are choosing to drink less alcohol due to health, fitness, and financial reasons. They are more health-conscious and aware of the negative effects of alcohol on their bodies. Financial considerations also play a role as they seek more cost-effective drink options.

The decision to cut back on alcohol consumption is apparent at various social occasions. Makeup artist Chen Xue, who is 27, observes this trend at most weddings she attends for work. “It’s perfectly normal,” Chen noted. “Why choose champagne when bubble tea is available?”
This shift signifies a broader cultural change, as traditional conventions give way to health-focused and financially prudent choices.
