The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is backing five new candidates as the midterm elections approach. With less than 100 days until November, Democrats aim to strengthen their position against Republicans.
This move follows Republican efforts to capitalize on successes by candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a far-left group that has unseated three House Democrats. Despite this, the DCCC is extending support to candidates in five districts believed to be competitive.
The five candidates include:
- Dr. Amish Shah in Arizona’s 1st district.
- Pia Dandiya, a former high school principal in Florida’s 22nd district.
- Former chaplain Lindsay James in Iowa’s 2nd district.
- Math teacher and union leader Jake Johnson in Minnesota’s 1st district.
- Firefighter Sam Forstag in Montana’s 1st district.
Currently, one of these districts is represented by Republican Rep. Brad Finstad, who is seeking reelection. Three other districts are open seats, with incumbents not seeking reelection: Rep. David Schweikert of Arizona, Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa, and Rep. Ryan Zinke of Montana. The Florida seat currently held by Democrat Rep. Lois Frankel has been redrawn to favor Republicans. Frankel will run in the 23rd district instead.
The DCCC’s “Red to Blue” program aims to support competitive Democratic candidates by offering financial and logistical resources. DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene highlighted the dissatisfaction among voters with Republican economic policies, stating, “The American people have soured on Republicans’ broken promises and failure to lower costs.”
Republicans seek to challenge long-standing political trends this August in an effort to maintain their House majority. Despite fears of an intraparty civil war due to DSA victories in states like Colorado and New York, Democratic leaders remain focused on the upcoming election challenges.
