Dolly Parton, an iconic figure in music and education, left a lasting impact on society. Her songs like Coat of Many Colors, Jolene, I Will Always Love You, and Here You Come Again have influenced countless lives and continue to resonate worldwide.
Parton’s Impact on Education
Aside from her musical achievements, Parton’s contributions to education set her apart. She founded the Imagination Library in 1995, honoring her father who was unable to read or write. This early childhood literacy program has distributed over 300 million books to children up to age 5 across several countries, including the U.S., Ireland, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Each child receives 60 books by the time they age out of the program.
Such an abundance of books has far-reaching benefits. Childhood literacy rates are linked to school dropout and incarceration statistics. The World Literacy Foundation reports that over 70% of incarcerated adults read below a fourth-grade level. A child unable to read proficiently by third grade is four times more likely to drop out of high school. Furthermore, more than 85% of juveniles in the court system are functionally low-literate.
Challenges in Reading Proficiency
There’s a continuing decline in reading scores that concerns policymakers and educators alike. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), or the Nation’s Report Card, measures reading and math proficiency every two years. Since 2015, reading scores have decreased for fourth and eighth graders. In 2024, scores for these grades fell by two points compared to 2022. Twelfth graders saw a decrease from 285 in 2019 to 283 in 2024.
Though there’s been a slight improvement among 9-year-olds between 2022 and 2025, reading scores remain unstable, particularly for younger students.
The Role of Imagination Library
The Imagination Library remains crucial in countering these trends. Parton understood how reading enriches lives, impacting children’s development and future. Reading proficiency leads to critical thinking, better understanding, and non-violent expression of disagreements.
Be not afraid of greatness: Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.– William Shakespeare
Parton embodied this greatness. Her legacy lives on in initiatives like the Imagination Library, which brings books to children, changing lives for years to come. Let’s honor her by furthering this legacy in every community.
Dolly Parton’s absence will be felt, but her contributions endure. Her influence remains in the hearts and minds of those she touched.
Jerald McNair, a school administrator with a doctorate in education, contributed to this reflection.
