Although initially hesitant to share her thoughts, she ultimately decided to discuss her experience with frankness.
Vega’s departure from CBS occurred in May, amid broader changes initiated by the network. She revealed encounters where she was allegedly encouraged to use footage of anti-ICE activists attacking perceived ICE agents, which she found unreliable. An incident involving Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s press conference was described as misinformation after thorough investigation, contrary to CBS’s directives to include related comments.
The network, under the leadership of editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, has undergone significant shifts. Vega recalled being asked to introduce a report about the US-Iran conflict with a statement favoring the US and its allies. She considered this a reflection of administration perspectives. Vega maintains that her broadcasts excluded questionable examples influenced by editorial interference.
Despite addressing misguided efforts by CBS News, Vega did not directly attribute actions to Weiss. She stated she was not given a reason for her firing and did not have opportunities for direct conversation with the editor-in-chief.
CBS News responded to Vega’s assertions, emphasizing the role of an editor-in-chief involves editorial direction, refuting claims of unjustified interference. Vega was one of several ’60 Minutes’ personnel dismissed during the network’s restructuring efforts initiated by Paramount CEO David Ellison, with veteran correspondent Scott Pelley also departing following tensions within the team.
