Dogs often become anxious and fearful during fireworks. To alleviate this, CBD treats have gained popularity among dog owners. These treats provide a calming effect without the psychoactive compound THC found in Cannabis plants. SunKissed Greenz, LLC, a Mokena-based CBD shop, recently offered free calming treats to dog owners to help prepare their pets for the loud noise of July Fourth fireworks.
Misty Nelson, owner of the store, launched her business online during the pandemic, eventually opening a physical location in 2022. Her shop has developed a loyal clientele, with customers visiting not only for products but also for friendly interactions. Kelly Garver, a regular customer, visits with her dog Sadie, who has benefited from the calming effects of CBD during firework displays.
CBD oil, used by Garver for her dogs, is also effective in addressing inflammation and supporting general health. Garver’s trust in SunKissed Greenz products stems from knowing they are produced by Nelson’s husband, Bryan, with Misty’s assistance. Garver sees lasting benefits for dogs experiencing anxiety and those in pain, creating a tranquil environment at home for her pets.
The inspiration for Nelson’s store came from her experience with a 15-year-old dog suffering from seizures. CBD successfully reduced these to one per day, extending her dog’s life. Nelson’s store offers CBD products with and without THC, catering to varying needs. She emphasizes starting with low doses for pets, gradually increasing while monitoring for temporary side effects like fatigue, thirst, or digestive issues.
Beyond retail, Nelson hosts dog adoption events and fundraiser activities for NAWS and Cache Creek Animal Rescue. She organizes community initiatives, such as dog yoga sessions and holiday donation drives, strengthening ties with customers and animal charities.
Preparing for fireworks, Tara Triefen visited Nelson’s shop with her Shorkie named Smalls to purchase calming treats. Triefen notes that CBD relaxes her dog, allowing them to calmly watch TV during firework displays.
“Dogs, cats and wildlife get very disoriented from the sound of fireworks, so keeping your pets in a small room can help them stay centered and feel more safe,” said Becca Keller, NAWS director.
April Finan, a veterinarian at Animal Hospital in Downers Grove, acknowledges CBD’s use in managing animal stress but cautions about its unregulated nature. She explains the lack of extensive studies on CBD safety and effectiveness. Finan advises pet owners to choose reputable products tested by independent labs and start with CBD cautiously.
Veterinarian Ward Phillips from the Low-Cost Clinic recommends traditional medications over CBD due to the more substantial research backing prescription drugs. While CBD might offer benefits, medications are favored for their established efficacy during stressful events.
The struggle with fireworks noise highlights the challenges faced by pets and the search for reliable calming solutions. CBD treats represent a potential aid, but experts like Phillips encourage thorough preparation, consult with veterinarians, and careful consideration of all available options for pet safety and comfort during holiday celebrations.
