Carlos Mencia Faces Tax Evasion Charges

Carlos Mencia, known for his comedic talent, has pleaded not guilty to serious legal allegations. He faces 12 felony charges related to failing to report or pay taxes on over $8 million in earnings. The 58-year-old comedian appeared in a Los Angeles County court where a judge reduced his bail from $250,000 to $50,000. Mencia, who was arrested last Thursday, has posted bail. However, it remains unclear if he has been released.

Mencia is accused of failing to file personal and corporate tax returns with the intent to evade taxes. Each of the six charges covers the years from 2019 to 2024. District Attorney Nathan Hochman described Mencia as a significant tax evader in California, stating that he owes more than $300,000 in state taxes on income amounting to $8.7 million. If convicted on all counts, Mencia could face over 11 years in prison.

These charges mark the first under the district attorney’s new Business Tax Fraud Unit, established in May by Hochman, a former prosecutor experienced in tax cases.

Born Ned Arnel Holness in Honduras and raised in East Los Angeles, Mencia’s career began in the LA stand-up scene in the late 1980s. He gained popularity in the early 2000s and ventured into film and television acting. His Comedy Central series, “Mind of Mencia,” aired from 2005 to 2008. Despite current legal challenges, Mencia continues to perform stand-up routines in clubs and theaters. His recent jail time caused him to miss several Southern California performances.
