New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler is set to begin his club’s wild-card series against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. Those who have followed Schlittler for the past two seasons know that his life off the field has gained attention alongside his outstanding performance on the mound.
Schlittler has delivered a remarkable season, boasting a 1.95 ERA with 239 strikeouts and 49 walks, positioning himself as a contender for the 2026 American League Cy Young Award. This level of excellence is aligned with his impressive debut season, where he concluded with two strong playoff starts against Boston and Toronto.
Raised in Walpole, Massachusetts, Schlittler grew up supporting his current rivals, the Red Sox. This background adds complexity to interactions with fans from opposing sides, which sometimes feel awkward rather than playful.
Schlittler’s interactions haven’t been confined to the baseball field. He frequently engages with social media, responding to negative comments before eventually retreating and assuming the role of victim. A notable instance involves his derogatory response to a female Red Sox podcast member who criticized his appearance, and his extended exchange with another fan regarding his postseason performance. Yankees director of organizational performance Chad Bohling even shared video clips showing people disparaging him.
Schlittler acknowledges the peculiarity of these interactions and assures that he plans to step back from such behavior. He told The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty, “There’s no reason to get involved with those people on social media, right now at least. They use me for clicks or whatever it is, and I feel like I’ve done a good job of handling that so far.” Schlittler remains focused on his preparations for game days rather than social media controversies.
Whether Schlittler will maintain this stance will soon be clear as the series unfolds, starting with Game 1 at Yankee Stadium.
