In Beavercreek, Ohio, a clash has erupted between Buc-ee’s, a well-known Texas convenience store chain, and Beaver’s Mini Mart, a local store. Buc-ee’s is famous for its defense of its buck-toothed beaver mascot and has been actively protecting its trademark against various cartoon animal logos.
The controversy began when Buc-ee’s sued Beaver’s Mini Mart over its beaver logo. Buc-ee’s claims the resemblance between the two logos infringes on its trademark. The lawsuit was filed shortly after Buc-ee’s opened its first Ohio store, located just thirty minutes from Beaver’s Mini Mart. The convenience store giant has requested a jury trial in federal court.
Beavercreek city officials have responded by adopting the beaver as part of the city’s historical identity. Meanwhile, supporters of Beaver’s Mini Mart have rallied online and staged boycotts against Buc-ee’s stores.
John Oliver, the British comedian, joined the fray through his show, “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” He publicly criticized Buc-ee’s history of lawsuits targeting logos featuring woodland creatures. Oliver even launched merchandise with a parody logo featuring a squirrel named Mr. Nutterbutter.
Community members have also shown support for Beaver’s Mini Mart. Local residents, including Austin Collins, have visited the store to express their opposition to the lawsuit, describing the action as “spiteful.”
Buc-ee’s explained that it first became aware of Beaver’s Mini Mart when its owner, Vic Boparai, registered the trade name in late October. Despite attempts to resolve the issue, Buc-ee’s felt compelled to file the lawsuit due to lack of communication from Boparai.
In response, Beavercreek City Council passed a resolution on August 10, making the beaver an official part of its history. This move came with support from Bucky the Beaver, mascot of local schools.
Social media has seen various humorous and supportive reactions to the fight. Some Dayton-area businesses have redesigned their logos to include beavers, demonstrating solidarity with Beaver’s Mini Mart. Fundraising efforts, including a GoFundMe campaign, aim to help cover legal costs for the mini mart, raising substantial sums to support their cause.
Governor Mike DeWine criticized the lawsuit, calling it “absurd.” With many local businesses incorporating the beaver in their branding, community support continues to grow for Beaver’s Mini Mart.
