Britney Spears Arrested, Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charge

On March 4, Britney Spears was involved in a driving under the influence incident, refusing to leave her BMW for approximately 10 minutes before police arrested her. According to a police report and dashcam video obtained by The Associated Press, the pop star exhibited signs of intoxication during field sobriety tests. She smelled of alcohol and appeared drunk.

The report from the California Highway Patrol described her behavior: “Her speech was rapid and slurred, her gait was unsteady, and she was fidgeting with her fingers.” Her demeanor shifted from confrontational and agitated to flamboyant and compliant. Officers noted that Spears also sometimes spoke with a British accent.

Spears claimed, “I could probably drink four bottles of wine and take care of you, I’m an angel.” Despite this statement, she asserted she had consumed only a mimosa hours earlier and rated her drunkenness at “zero.”

Breath tests found her blood alcohol levels at .05 and .06, below California’s .08 impairment threshold. Officers discovered a bottle of Adderall, a medication for ADHD, in her purse, which was not prescribed to her. She submitted a blood sample for drug testing, yet the results weren’t in the report.

Spears was stopped for speeding and swerving on U.S. 101 near the Los Angeles County line. Initially resistant to exiting her vehicle, citing past experiences of being pranked and harassed, she expressed fear of stepping onto the highway. She suggested going to her house, offering to cook food or lasagna, and mentioned having a pool.

Officers eventually cuffed Spears, arrested her, and took her to jail before releasing her on bail after a few hours. Shortly afterward, she voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility. On May 4, she pleaded guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and drugs, avoiding further jail time.

Ventura County prosecutors stated her plea agreement reflected usual practice for those without prior DUI offenses, without road accidents or injuries, and possessing low blood alcohol levels. Spears’ attorney, Michael Goldstein, acknowledged, “I don’t think anybody’s happy about pleading guilty to anything, but under the circumstances, to get this behind her, I think everybody is pleased with the result.” Spears did not attend the plea hearing.

Britney Spears rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with multiple platinum albums and hit songs such as “Toxic,” “… Baby One More Time,” and “Oops! … I Did It Again.” In the early 2000s, she became a frequent tabloid topic, undergoing significant public scrutiny as she struggled with mental health issues while paparazzi documented her private matters.

Spears spent about 14 years under a court-ordered conservatorship managed primarily by her father, which concluded in 2021. Following the termination, she married, divorced, and published the bestselling memoir “The Woman in Me.”
