Bonnie Tyler Recovering After Coma, Remains in Intensive Care

Bonnie Tyler, known for her hit song “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has emerged from a medically induced coma following cardiac arrest but remains in a serious condition. She has been hospitalized in Portugal for over a month.

On June 15, Tyler’s team shared an update on her official website, confirming she is no longer in a coma. However, she remains “very unwell” and under intensive care.

“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal,” the statement noted.

The team expressed gratitude for the support from fans, yet asked for privacy during her recovery. They announced the cancellation of upcoming shows. They remain hopeful that performances scheduled for the fall might proceed.

Previously, in May, Tyler was rushed to a hospital for emergency intestinal surgery, leading to her coma, as confirmed by Fox News Digital. Her medical team believes she will recover, though it will be a slow process.

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler launched her music career in 1976 with “Lost In France.” She gained worldwide fame with songs like “Holding Out for a Hero,” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” She remains a beloved figure in Europe and participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 representing the U.K.

Tyler continues to tour and celebrate 50 years in the music industry on the Jubilee Tour. In a 2025 interview with The Times, she stated that touring keeps her motivated and active.

Many still resonate with her iconic 1980s hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” especially during solar or lunar eclipses. She expressed excitement about hearing the song on the radio, as mentioned in a “Good Morning America” interview from April 2024.

Since July 1973, Tyler has been married to Robert Sullivan, an Olympic judo competitor turned real estate developer. They have no children and divide their time between homes in Wales and Portugal.
