Twenty-eight beluga whales are scheduled for relocation from a closed theme park in Canada to various aquariums across the United States. This follows an emergency import approval by federal officials as part of an international rescue effort.
Closure and Relocation
Marineland, situated in Niagara Falls, Ontario, closed its doors to visitors in 2024. Despite the closure, the park retained possession of the whales but lacked the resources for their care. Faced with the prospect of euthanizing the animals, the park sought relocation plans and additional funding.
The relocation will involve moving the whales to accredited aquariums like SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, Georgia Aquarium, and Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Two whales are set to be transferred to Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, pending necessary permits from Spanish authorities.
Authorities and Actions
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) authorized the relocation to ensure the whales receive proper medical treatment and care. NOAA noted that Canadian facilities are currently unable to provide adequate husbandry or medical care.
Efforts for the rescue and transfer will prioritize the comfort and safety of the belugas. The operation is expected to take several weeks to complete.
Scrutiny and Legislation
Marineland has faced criticism over its treatment of animals. Since 2019, twenty beluga whales have died at the facility, according to reports by The Canadian Press. In response to concerns about animal captivity, Canada enacted legislation in 2019 prohibiting the captivity of whales and dolphins.
Canada’s Fisheries Minister, Joanne Thompson, approved a proposal in January to move the belugas to the U.S. Final export authorization will be granted following health checks by veterinarians.
