SpaceX’s Near Missile Launch of Starship Halted by Engine Failure

SpaceX’s ambitious attempt to launch its mega Starship rocket on a test flight was abruptly halted when some engines failed to start, leading to a launch abort. The launch was scheduled to send Starship on a space-skimming flight across the globe.

With a towering height of 407 feet (124 meters) and equipped with 33 engines, Starship holds the title of the largest and most powerful rocket in the world. This was set to be the 13th test flight for the rocket.

Engine ignition began three seconds before the planned liftoff, as observed from a drone above the launch pad. However, once the ignition commenced, the engines that fired quickly shut down, keeping the rocket on the ground. After this failure, the launch team began draining fuel from the rocket.

“Next launch attempt hopefully in a few days.” – Elon Musk announced via X.

Prior to the abort, conditions favored SpaceX, including optimal weather. Onboard Starship were 20 of SpaceX’s advanced Starlink satellites, intended to communicate with existing satellites while capturing images of the rocket’s heat shield. The plan did not include recovering the first-stage booster or the spacecraft as they were set to end in the ocean.

NASA has significant interest in Starship, as the space agency plans to use it to land astronauts on the moon in the coming years. In collaboration with SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, NASA is working to build and fly lunar landers that will return humans to the moon, which has not been done for over fifty years.

The landers, named Starship and Blue Moon, need to be ready for operation by the next year. This is for the Artemis III mission where the crew will practice docking with the landers in Earth’s orbit. Following that, Artemis IV, expected no earlier than 2028, aims to transport two astronauts to the moon’s south polar region using one of these landers.
