Australian Police Make Record Seizure of Cocaine in Sydney

Australian police have seized a record 3 tons of cocaine in Sydney, marking the largest cocaine confiscation in the country’s history. The cocaine was found hidden in plastic tubs that were buried underground on the outskirts of the city. According to a joint organized crime investigation unit, a Sydney-based crime syndicate orchestrated the import of the cocaine, bringing it from a foreign vessel in northern Queensland to Sydney for distribution.

International Cooperation and Investigation

The origin of the drugs is still under investigation. Australian Federal Police Commander Stephen Jay stated they will collaborate with both international and domestic law enforcement to track down the criminal networks involved. The seized cocaine is valued at over Aus$800 million ($560 million) in street sales, a loss that will significantly impact organized crime finances.

We know criminals go to extreme lengths, and often risk their own lives, to smuggle drugs into Australia with no regard to the harm they cause to Australian communities.

Commander Jay underscored the dangerous lengths to which criminals will go to smuggle drugs into Australia. Images released by police depict the drugs in large containers and the arrest of a suspect.

Involvement of the MV Wealth

Authorities have detained the MV Wealth, a suspected drug smuggling ship, in the Solomon Islands for further investigation. Police noted that Pacific Island states are increasingly used as transit points for cocaine and methamphetamine heading to Australia and New Zealand from South America and Southeast Asia. A social media post from the police highlighted criminals’ disregard for boundaries as they exploit oceans for trafficking.

Arrests and Charges

The cocaine was discovered Friday at a property in Londonderry, northwest of Sydney. Police arrested two men, aged 21 and 25, who allegedly tried to flee the scene. Both face charges of possessing a commercial amount of unlawfully imported drugs, an offense carrying a potential life sentence. Six other individuals involved had been previously arrested on related drug charges, including a 31-year-old woman linked to a safehouse used for storing the cocaine.

Australia’s Drug War

Cocaine-related deaths in Australia have risen, with a 28% increase to 141 deaths recorded in 2024, as reported by the Penington Institute. The recent bust follows several previous cocaine seizures in Australia. In September of the previous year, over 1,000 pounds of cocaine were found concealed in a shipping container on the Sydney waterfront, leading to the arrest of three dockworkers. The same month, authorities dismantled a drug trafficking organization known as ‘The Commission,’ responsible for importing over a ton of cocaine.

Additionally, in December 2024, police seized 2.3 tons of cocaine and arrested 13 individuals after a fishing vessel breakdown off Queensland’s coast. This case also aligns with recent news from the U.S., where authorities discovered a drug tunnel from Mexico to California, showcasing the extensive challenges in combating international drug trafficking.
