Australia Criticizes Referee After World Cup Loss to U.S.

A star player from Australia’s World Cup team expressed frustration with referee Felix Zwayer following a 2-0 defeat to the United States. Both the team’s head coach and an assistant coach echoed these complaints.

Forward Nestory Irankunda commented on the referee’s performance, saying, “The ref was having a stinker today.” He accused Zwayer of favoring the U.S. with calls, emphasizing that both teams deserved fair refereeing.

Controversial Decisions

Irankunda’s remarks followed criticism from Australia manager Tony Popovic. Popovic spoke about the referee’s decisions, stating that fouls were awarded too easily and inconsistently during the match. “Today was not the best day for the referee,” Popovic stated, feeling that Australia was disadvantaged by the officials.

One major contentious incident occurred with the U.S.’s second goal. Initially disallowed for offside, the goal was permitted after a VAR review. The Australians argued that their goalkeeper was impeded, but the decision stood after review.

Assistant coach Paul Okon contended that goalkeeper Patrick Beach was obstructed during the play. However, VAR upheld the goal.

Match Performance

In spite of refereeing critiques, Popovic acknowledged the American team’s efforts. He admitted that the Australian players appeared “sluggish” during the game, acknowledging that the U.S. players were faster to the ball and more dominant in duels. Two soft goals conceded early also put Australia at a disadvantage.

Zwayer, the referee, briefly dealt with a cramp towards the match’s end. Assistance came from both the U.S.’s Folarin Balogun and Australia’s Aiden O’Neill, who helped stretch his leg.

The result placed the U.S. in first place with six points, while Australia held second with three points.
