Democrats in Austin, Texas, are under scrutiny after quickly condemning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a shooting incident. An ICE officer shot a man on Sunday. Before identifying the man as Wilber Rafael Garces Perez or establishing basic facts, local Democrats criticized ICE.
Prominent figures such as Rep. Greg Casar, Councilman Mike Siegel, and Mayor Kirk Watson voiced their concerns. Casar, a member of the progressive Squad caucus, highlighted the incident during a press conference, emphasizing the impact of ICE’s presence in Austin. He called for ICE to end its operations in the community for safety reasons.
Conservative commentators swiftly criticized the Democrats, accusing them of reacting prematurely. Former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin questioned the consistency of their outrage concerning crimes involving illegal immigrants.
Texas Republican State Rep. Andy Hopper criticized the rhetoric from local leaders. Dennis Farris, president of the Austin Police Retired Officers Association, expressed disappointment in their reactions. He was particularly surprised by Mayor Watson’s strong response, noting the mayor’s typically measured demeanor.
The reaction from Watson was heavily criticized online, with many questioning his statements before the investigation progressed. Austin attorney Adam Loewy noted his surprise at the mayor’s response, especially so early in the process.
Farris challenged claims of ICE surging in Austin, stating that such operations have long occurred without significant backlash. He attributed recent reactions to broader political sentiments tied to the Trump administration.
The aftermath of the incident saw Austin Police dealing with unrest, including arrests and damaged vehicles. According to DHS sources, Garces Perez, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was involved in a law enforcement operation at the time of the shooting. His attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, claims the incident followed a series of confrontations between Perez and an unmarked vehicle.
Lincoln-Goldfinch also highlighted issues with Garces Perez’s deportation order, citing a missed notice due to an address error. She expressed intentions to address these misunderstandings and called for accountability from involved agencies.
