ASU Faces Inquiry Amid Intense Hockey Team Workout

Arizona State University is scrutinizing a rigorous team training session that resulted in hockey player Matthew Mayich’s incapacitation. The athlete collapsed and fell into a coma, prompting legal action. His family’s lawyer, Rob Carey, appeared on ‘Fox & Friends First’ to discuss the incident and demand accountability.

Players Demand Action

Seven hockey players from the Arizona State Sun Devils expressed concern over the university’s response. Fearing reprisals, they had their attorney submit a 26-page letter to ASU President Michael Crow, urging the suspension of head coach Greg Powers and his team pending further investigation.

Conflicting Accounts of Events

Disagreement arose over the university’s review of the August 20 training. Players challenged the findings that claimed insufficient hydration and medical care led to Mayich’s collapse. Their letter emphasized a lack of separation from coaches who influence their careers.

Details of the Workout

The workout overseen by a former U.S. Army Green Beret turned intense. ASU’s initial review reported a water break twenty minutes in, yet players contested this, saying it occurred closer to forty minutes and lasted only moments. Most players didn’t access the water.

Mayich showed distress early, struggling with exercises. His teammates wrote about his disorientation and inability to carry a partner. They claimed inadequate monitoring and intervention despite warning signs.

Post-Collapse Challenges

After collapsing, Mayich reportedly lay in the sun for minutes while ASU’s report suggested he twice sat upright. Players stated that shade and cooling resources were scarce amid oppressive heat conditions.

Coach’s Response

Head Coach Powers, when approached, declined to discuss due to the situation’s difficulty. Players recounted that he minimized Mayich’s condition, referring to it as mild heat stroke, and stressed team progress.

The Sun Devils gear up for their 2026–27 season opener against Lindenwood. They hope the inquiry resolves current uncertainties.
