As Armenia approaches its national election on Sunday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has been actively discussing potential steps toward joining the European Union. He has also highlighted an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
This effort by Armenia occurs within a backdrop of strategic rivalry in the South Caucasus between Russia and Western powers. Armenia, despite its small size, seeks closer ties with the European Union and the United States. This shift has resulted in severe economic repercussions from Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin has even hinted that Armenia could suffer a fate similar to Ukraine’s if it persists in moving toward the West.
A campaign rally for the Civil Contract party, led by Pashinyan, recently took place in Yerevan, Armenia, showcasing public support for this political direction.
