Arkansas Faces Challenges in Maternity Care Access

Arkansas frequently earns recognition as the most pro-life state in the United States, as cited by Americans United for Life for six years in a row. Yet, recent data from March of Dimes provides a different perspective on how the state supports women and children.

In Arkansas, a surprising number of counties face significant challenges in providing maternity care. Of the state’s 75 counties, 33 (accounting for 44 percent) are classified as maternity care deserts. Within these areas, hospitals and birth centers offering obstetric care are non-existent, and there are no obstetric clinicians available.

This situation means women often need to travel considerable distances for basic prenatal appointments, sometimes driving an hour or more. Such distances can create barriers to accessing essential care and support during pregnancy.

The lack of local maternity care services poses serious health risks and highlights the need for improvements. Addressing these shortages is crucial for ensuring that all expectant mothers receive the necessary care and support.
