Anthropic’s AI Model Sparks Debate on Safety
Matt Shumer, co-founder and CEO of OthersideAI, discussed Anthropic’s latest AI model, Mythos, on ‘The Sunday Briefing’. With its ability to autonomously identify software vulnerabilities, Mythos has raised concerns about cybersecurity. In response, Anthropic has limited public access, sharing the model with major companies and the US government to bolster cyber defense against future threats to critical infrastructure and national security.
AI Journalism Fellowships May Lack Transparency
The Tarbell Center for AI Journalism funds reporter fellowships at several major news outlets like Bloomberg, Time, NBC News, The Guardian, and the Los Angeles Times. While some outlets disclose the funding relationships, others don’t, raising questions about the standards for transparency. Tarbell pays its fellows between $60,000 to $80,000, with more experienced fellows earning up to $110,000.
Commitment to Independent Journalism
Tarbell emphasizes its dedication to independent journalism that scrutinizes AI technologies and advocates for beneficial societal discourse. It maintains editorial independence, ensuring donors like Coefficient Giving don’t influence reporting. Coefficient Giving, which supports Anthropic investor Dustin Moskovitz, has provided significant funding to Tarbell.
Disclosure Practices Among Publications
Harry Booth, a Time reporter, visited Anthropic’s headquarters but did not mention his fellowship in his reporting. Similarly, The Verge reporter Robert Hart covered OpenAI without disclosing his paid fellowship. NBC News, however, includes an editorial note in articles funded by Tarbell, transparently linking the fellowship to AI-related content.
Tarbell requests consistent transparency from fellows and publications regarding funding and affiliations. It notes that disclosure is mandatory during fellowships but may cease if fellows are hired full-time by host publications. Leo Briceno of Fox News Digital, for example, is part of a team maintaining high transparency standards in reporting.
