Steak ‘n Shake Makes Bold Ingredient Changes

Steak ‘n Shake has announced a significant change to its menu. The fast-food chain, with around 400 locations across the U.S., is now serving buns free from seed oils. This move aligns with their broader effort to improve ingredient quality.

Starting this week, customers will enjoy buns “drenched in pure Grade AA Wisconsin butter,” as stated in a Monday post on social media platform X. This follows Steak ‘n Shake’s June changeover to grass-fed beef and the use of 100% beef tallow for frying items like chicken tenders and onion rings.

Michael Boes, the chief MAHA officer, explained to Fox News that their focus is on using real ingredients, which he believes offer better taste.

The chain’s dedication to more natural offerings is highlighted on their website, where they discuss transitioning away from seed oils. This includes serving cane sugar Coca-Cola and the switch to a2 milk, implemented last December.

Public reaction has been supportive. U.S. Representative Nancy Mace voiced approval on social media, and many others have expressed eagerness to try the revised offerings.

Seed oils, which are common in processed foods, remain debated in the nutrition field. While figures like U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. criticize their use, the American Heart Association has endorsed them, emphasizing their benefits.

Nutrition expert Cate Shanahan has recommended avoiding certain seed oils. Named “the hateful eight,” these include oils like corn, canola, and soybean, which may lack nutritional advantages.
