Event Details
The 16th Presidents Cup is set to take place at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago’s northwest suburbs. This biennial team event features the top male golfers from the United States competing against a team of international players from regions outside Europe.
Understanding the Presidents Cup
The Presidents Cup is a team match-play event between the U.S. and an international team, first played in 1994. The competition takes place every two years, alternating with the Ryder Cup, which involves the U.S. against Europe. Each team consists of 12 players, with selections based on a combination of automatic qualifications and captain’s picks. After postponements due to significant historical events, the event schedule now accommodates these adjustments.
Historical Context
The United States holds a dominant record in the Presidents Cup, boasting a 13-1-1 record. The U.S. team has claimed victory in the last ten cups, and they have never lost on home ground. The only international team win was in 1998 at Royal Melbourne, while the 2003 event ended in a tie in South Africa.
Format of the Competition
The competition includes a series of partner matches such as “foursomes” (alternate shots) and “fourball” (best ball), culminating in a day of singles matches. The Presidents Cup’s distinct format allows for four days of play, with 30 matches in total. Both teams aim to achieve at least 15.5 points to win the Cup, with each match awarded one point.
