Newly released police body camera footage shows the arrest of Luigi Mangione by Altoona, Pennsylvania police. Mangione’s arrest ended a five-day manhunt after the 2024 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel.
The footage, obtained by CBS News New York, also covers the subsequent property search and played a role during a December 2025 suppression hearing. During this hearing, Mangione’s defense attorneys claimed the backpack search violated his rights. This release marks the footage’s first public showing outside of court.
Officers responded to a 911 call in December 2024 reporting a man resembling the suspect at a McDonald’s in Altoona. The body camera shows officers questioning Mangione about a fake driver’s license under the name ‘Mark Rosario.’ According to the video, Mangione identified himself and admitted to lying about his identity.
The footage also captures Mangione’s transport to the police station, where a strip search occurred. A firearm, later linked to the crime scene, was recovered from his backpack. A state judge ruled that most of the evidence from the search could be used in the trial.
Legal expert Richard Shorenstein commented that officers in the footage did not seem worried about safety, despite claims that the backpack search was safety-driven.
Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking via interstate facilities. He also faces second-degree murder, weapons, and forgery charges. A prior first-degree murder charge was dismissed in the state trial last year. His federal sentencing is scheduled for December, and a decision about the state case’s progression remains pending.
