Allison Tilly’s fearlessness and quick learning turned a dire situation into a championship victory for Lemont. With multiple injuries plaguing the team, Lemont faced the sectional in need of a goalkeeper. Sophomore Tilly, who normally plays as a defender, stepped up despite never having played in the net before.
Tilly confidently said, “I have a background in basketball, volleyball, and softball so I was like, ‘I know I can do it.'”
After a week of intense practice, Tilly’s efforts culminated in a remarkable performance on Friday night. She delivered an exceptional display by making eight vital saves, assisting Lemont to a 2-1 win over the host Celtics in the Class 2A Providence Sectional championship in New Lenox.
Gabriela Kuruc, an Illinois-Chicago recruit, scored both goals for Lemont, with an assist from Madison Weil. This victory marked Lemont’s first sectional title since 2018.
Tilly expressed the significance of this win as Lemont prepares to face Geneva in the Kankakee Supersectional. This match holds special importance as longtime coach Rick Prangen plans to retire after the season.
Tilly stated, “This is a huge milestone and a huge step for us since we haven’t been here since 2018. We want to make it a memorable last season for them and keep it going.”
Providence’s Aubrey Curry equalized the score with an assist from Bailey Ortiz, but Kuruc responded swiftly by scoring with a stunning shot from 30 yards out. This crucial play demonstrated their rigorous training and quick play style.
Tilly’s heroic efforts in the final minutes sealed the win, showcasing her ability to handle high-pressure situations adeptly. Coach Prangen applauded her stellar performance.
Prangen exclaimed, “She was phenomenal at the end of the game. She was unreal.”
Tilly admitted that although practices involved overthinking, the actual game situation helped her focus and execute her role effectively. Kuruc praised Tilly’s adaptation and skills, showing immense gratitude for her contribution.
After achieving victory, Tilly savored the moment of triumph and camaraderie with her team. Her adaptability and determination have been instrumental in Lemont’s successful run.
