AI’s Impact on College Admissions and Employment

Artificial intelligence is set to transform the job landscape in various industries. A significant area of concern is the adoption of AI in college and university admissions offices. Employment in these sectors may face changes due to AI’s ability to efficiently handle tasks traditionally performed by human staff.

The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources conducted a study in April 2023, examining over 12,000 admissions employees across 940 institutions. With more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the United States, this workforce constitutes a sizable group that may be impacted by AI.

Admissions processes involve many elements that AI can manage effectively, including GPAs, test scores, resumes, and recommendations. AI can assess these components swiftly, providing a fair analysis for all applicants while reducing biases.

AI’s role in admissions can extend beyond academic criteria. It can evaluate factors such as geographic diversity, family income, and extracurricular achievements. Schools can leverage AI to ensure adherence to legal restrictions, such as avoiding race, ethnicity, or religious considerations in admissions processes.

Employment shifts may occur as AI replaces the subjective judgment currently exercised by admissions staff. Objective evaluations powered by AI could improve transparency and trust in the admissions process.

Colleges and universities might benefit from incorporating AI alongside current admissions structures to compare outcomes and refine their processes further. This could lead to more equitable and efficient admissions.
