In Magdeburg, Germany, supporters of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) gathered to celebrate the party’s performance in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. The far-right party has emerged as the leading force in this significant regional election, according to exit polls.
Projections suggest that the AfD is comfortably ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU). However, it remains uncertain whether the party will secure enough seats to form a majority in the state parliament.
Data from German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF indicate that the AfD is on track to capture between 44.1% and 44.5% of the vote. In contrast, the Christian Democratic Union is expected to garner 18.5%. Compared to the 2021 regional election where AfD won 20.8%, these figures mark a substantial increase for the party.
If accurate, these projections reveal a halving of CDU’s voter share and a doubling for the AfD. Should they succeed in establishing a government, it would be a first in postwar Germany for a far-right party to govern a state.
AfD’s influence is expanding beyond eastern Germany as the party also leads in federal polls. A victory in Saxony-Anhalt represents a pivotal moment for a party labeled as extremist by several domestic intelligence agencies.
AfD federal leader Alice Weidel expressed confidence, stating that the CDU will lose future elections. “We are seeing explosive growth here,” she said, alluding to prospects in East Germany and nationwide.
Key to AfD’s success in Saxony-Anhalt is Ulrich Siegmund, a 35-year-old candidate with a radical agenda. Known for his polished appearance, Siegmund differentiates himself from his party colleagues with his friendly image but maintains hard-right positions.
Siegmund advocates for mass deportations and significant policy shifts in immigration and education. He also supports reforming the region’s public broadcaster and enhancing ties with Russia and the MAGA movement in the United States.
Following the election results, Siegmund declared, “We have written history,” thanking Chancellor Merz for inadvertently aiding in AfD’s campaign efforts.
