Shawn Regan’s op-ed from July 20 highlighted the urgent maintenance and upkeep requirements at U.S. national parks. These parks are experiencing near-record visitor numbers as people seek tranquility, solace, and recreational opportunities. Often termed America’s best idea, these parks now face significant challenges due to increased visitor traffic.
The infrastructure at many of these sites is deteriorating, which impacts the visitor experience and the natural environment. Despite being popular destinations, essential improvements and repairs are not being prioritized by Congress. This lack of attention leaves the parks vulnerable and diminishes their condition over time.
National parks offer numerous benefits, from conservation of landscapes and ecosystems to social and recreational activities. Without the necessary upkeep, the burden on these spaces intensifies, threatening the very attributes that draw so many to visit.
Efforts to address these issues require legislative action. Funding and resources should be allocated to maintain and improve park infrastructures, thereby securing their future. Lawmakers must recognize the significance of national parks and take decisive action to preserve these treasured American landscapes.
