Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, encountered social media controversy following his 9/11 message posted on his X account. El-Sayed stated, “They didn’t just attack America that day, they attacked the idea of America.” He emphasized the concept of America as a nation of ideals and shared the importance of freedom and justice. He acknowledged the struggle to achieve these ideals fully, while remembering the lives lost during the 9/11 attacks.
El-Sayed’s statement received criticism, partly due to his association with Hasan Piker, a streamer known for controversial remarks, including claims that the U.S. “deserved 9/11.” The criticism was amplified by the Libs of TikTok account, which described El-Sayed as a “FRAUD.” Steve Guest, a political commentator, shared a picture of Piker and El-Sayed together, questioning their relationship.
Ryan Girdusky, a GOP consultant, criticized El-Sayed’s association with Piker. He labeled El-Sayed’s actions as dishonest. Joanna Rodriguez from the National Republican Senatorial Committee accused El-Sayed of belittling American lives lost while showing sympathy for terrorists.
Other GOP figures like Mike Hahn and Joey Mannarino expressed surprise and disbelief regarding El-Sayed’s campaign momentum. Mannarino questioned El-Sayed’s proximity to winning the race, referencing his ties with Piker and labeling him as an extremist.
El-Sayed has clarified that Piker does not represent his campaign. He stated, “Nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokesperson.” He pointed out that the campaign focuses on practical issues like security and healthcare, which matter to Michigan residents.
Chuck Ross, an investigative reporter, noted El-Sayed’s message this time did not touch on the subsequent “War on Terror.” El-Sayed’s past remarks often criticized military actions linked with the war. His statement reflects ongoing debates and complex narratives surrounding terrorism and its aftermath.
Abdul El-Sayed continues to face scrutiny and calls to disavow certain statements connected to his campaign. The campaign has not responded to requests for comment regarding these issues.
