The Los Angeles Rams stirred excitement at Wednesday’s training camp. Retired Super Bowl champion Aaron Donald appeared on the NFL transaction wire as he participated in a workout with the team.
This development raised curiosity due to rumors that Donald was considering coming out of retirement to join the Rams for the upcoming season. Head coach Sean McVay provided insight into Donald’s involvement at the camp, balancing humor with explanation.
Best tryout that we’ve ever had,” McVay quipped to Gregg Rosenthal. He added, “I think he could make the team.
McVay clarified, “That was honestly our way of being able to get a workout with him within the parameters of what’s necessary.” Rams run game coordinator and defensive line coach Giff Smith also praised Donald, calling it the best tryout he’s ever seen.
Donald, 35, is assessing whether he is ready for an 11th season after last playing in 2023. During his career, the 10-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year has amassed 543 tackles, 111 sacks, 21 passes defended, and 24 forced fumbles over 154 regular-season games.
A return to the Rams could align Donald with a formidable defense. This offseason, the team added NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Also joining the defense is Trent McDuffie, a two-time Super Bowl-winning cornerback from the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 2024, Donald announced his retirement, expressing a lack of desire for training and feeling satisfied with his football achievements. Recently, his enthusiasm reignited, possibly inspired by the Rams’ talented roster.
The team’s offense is strong, led by last year’s NFL MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford. He is supported by star wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. With these assets, the Rams are favorites to win the Super Bowl in 2027. Donald’s addition would bolster their status as top contenders.
