A Brother’s Story: Remembering Stephen Siller and the Foundations of Tunnel to Towers

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Frank Siller’s life changed forever. His younger brother, Stephen Siller, was one of the firefighters who courageously responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center that day. This event marked a turning point in Frank’s life as he received a devastating call that Stephen would not be coming home.

In the early days of cell phones, Frank repeatedly tried to reach Stephen using their shared Nextel phones, hoping against hope for an answer. He faced an ominous silence, indicating the reality he dreaded. Each passing hour without a response intensified the sense of loss that would soon extend to the entire family.

Once Frank returned home, the family and friends gathered, hoping for good news amid the unfolding tragedy. It was during this time that Richie Obermeyer, a firefighter and trusted neighbor, confirmed that no survivors were returning from Ground Zero. Frank’s heart sank upon receiving this news, and tears began to flow as he shared the heartbreaking confirmation with his family.

For Stephen’s wife, Sally, and their five children—Katherine, Olivia, Genevieve, Jake, and baby Stephen—the loss meant facing life without a father. Stephen’s legacy, marked by his resilience and kindness, had already made a deep impact on those around him. Despite the overwhelming grief, Frank and his family held onto Stephen’s guiding principle: to do good while time remains.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation emerged from this mission. Founded by Frank in honor of his brother, the organization aims to support America’s heroes and their families, echoing Stephen’s selfless deeds. Through Tunnel to Towers, a growing number of people have joined efforts to assist those impacted by tragedy and loss, honoring Stephen’s spirit.

Stephen’s sacrifice on that painful day is a testament to his valor and the profound influence he had on those who knew him. The family continues to uphold his legacy, finding solace in the words of Saint Francis of Assisi, which inspired Stephen: “While we have time, let us do good.”
