California Gubernatorial and Los Angeles Mayoral Races Heat Up with Outsider Candidates

Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate for governor in California, emphasizes the growing support for his campaign and Spencer Pratt’s independent run for Los Angeles mayor. Both candidates represent a shift towards outsiders in the traditionally left-leaning state.

Hilton, a former Fox News Channel host and conservative commentator, is endorsed by former President Donald Trump. In a recent interview on “Fox News @Night,” Hilton stated, “People here are tired of the one-party rule, which has been ongoing for 16 years.” He highlights the Democratic dominance in California’s state government as a source of frustration among voters.

Hilton also mentions the campaign of Spencer Pratt, a reality TV star and social media influencer, who is running as an independent for Los Angeles mayor. Pratt’s campaign, marked by a populist approach, is gaining momentum despite the city’s Democratic majority.

“The energy behind Spencer in LA, and our campaign statewide, is significant. We are both outsiders and have never held office before,” Hilton commented. “Our goal is to challenge the existing system, which is not effective, and that message resonates with the voters.”

Pratt’s campaign focuses on issues like homelessness, crime, and government accountability. His prominence increased after losing his home in devastating wildfires last year, impacting over 17,000 homes in Los Angeles County.

The current Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass, faces opposition from Pratt and from progressive City Council member Nithya Raman. The mayoral race will proceed to a runoff if no candidate secures over 50% in the upcoming election.

In the governor’s race, polls show Hilton competing with Democrat Xavier Becerra, former Cabinet secretary under President Biden, for the nomination. Other candidates include billionaire Tom Steyer, Tony Thurmond, and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.

Among Republicans, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and others are also in the race. Like the mayoral election, the gubernatorial primary will result in a runoff if no candidate wins outright.
