Lake Central’s Tyler Thuftedal Finds His Stride in Playoff Win

Lake Central senior first baseman Tyler Thuftedal is hitting his stride just when it’s needed. Thuftedal acknowledged a challenging start: “I didn’t get off to the start I wanted,” he said. “But these last few games, I’ve been feeling like myself. I’m feeling way more confident. I’ve been contributing more than I have been.” His performance was evident during the Class 4A Crown Point Sectional first-round game against Munster.

Thuftedal made a memorable playoff debut, batting 2-for-2 with two doubles and contributing a run scored and an RBI during Lake Central’s decisive 13-3 win over Munster in five innings. An intentional walk in the fifth reflected his growing respect from opponents. “I was surprised,” he remarked. “That was a first for me, especially with the year I’ve been having. It’s been a little rough. But I’ve definitely found it.”

Sophomore designated hitter Jacob Forystek also shone, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, scoring three runs, and stealing two bases. The Indians, holding a record of 22-8, were set to face Morton next in the sectional semifinal.

Thuftedal’s batting average rose to .215 following the game, an improvement for someone who began the game with only three doubles for the season. Coach Mike Swartzentruber praised his response to adversity. “He’s an interesting guy because he’s a senior and he had played all year and had struggled until a week and a half ago,” Swartzentruber noted. “I brought a sophomore up who played some first base, and he handled it very well. We alternated between games, and he improved. It was like something clicked mentally.”

Thuftedal had a challenging finish last season, batting 2-for-7 before a slipped disk in his back cut his time short. This season’s experience rotating with Hunter Segal drove him. “That lit a fire under me because I wanted to play every day,” he revealed. “I got more aggressive. I have nothing to lose, so why not just go up there swinging?”

Junior catcher Brayden Walls, committed to Ball State, took note: “He’s been coming alive recently,” said Walls. “His bat’s been coming alive. It’s great to see.”

Munster (23-7), on par with Andrean in the Northwest Crossroads Conference, led 3-0 in the first inning. Lake Central rallied in the third, scoring five runs. Connor Friesema’s pivotal two-run single and Thuftedal’s run-scoring double electrified the game. An impressive eight-run burst in the fifth, including Walls’ three-run home run, capped the performance. “We put together good at-bats,” Swartzentruber said. “Then you can relax, and then the hits, you just get on a roll. Sometimes it snowballs.”

Lake Central’s sophomore pitcher Owen Kopercinski rebounded from a challenging first inning, retiring 10 consecutive batters. Despite walking a batter in the fifth, he ended the game with a key strikeout. His previous performance, allowing just one run in six innings against Munster, supported the decision to start him again. “He’s the guy I thought for this game was best suited,” Swartzentruber shared. “Even for a sophomore, I thought his mentality was best suited to handle it.”

The Indians, strong with 14 wins from their last 16 games, continue their journey, but Thuftedal took time to appreciate this win: “This was electric,” he said. “That was the most fun game of the season. It was great to be part of that.”
